Many people picture cattle grazing in green pastures during the summer, but raising beef is a year-round commitment. Every season brings new challenges, different jobs, and important decisions that help ensure our cattle remain healthy while producing high-quality beef.
At Ogilvie Stock Ranch, no two days are exactly the same, but the rhythm of the seasons guides nearly everything we do.
Spring: Calving and New Growth
Spring is one of the busiest and most rewarding times of the year.
As the snow melts and the grass begins to grow, calves are arriving. During calving season, we check cows frequently, assist when needed, and make sure each newborn calf gets off to a healthy start.
It’s also the beginning of pasture season. Fences are repaired, water systems are checked, and preparations begin for moving cattle onto fresh grass.
Summer: Growing on Grass and Healthy Pastures
Summer is when our cattle spend their days grazing.
Rotational grazing allows pastures time to recover while providing cattle with fresh forage. Throughout the season we monitor grass conditions, water supplies, and cattle health.
Although it may look peaceful from a distance, there’s always work happening behind the scenes—from fixing fences to checking mineral supplies and planning for winter feed.
Fall: Preparing for Winter
Autumn is all about preparation.
Calves are weaned from their mothers, hay is harvested and stored, and cattle are moved as grazing conditions change.
This is also when we begin planning for the months ahead. Ranching requires thinking several seasons in advance, and winter preparation starts long before the first snowfall.
Winter: Caring for the Herd
Winter doesn’t slow ranching down.
Instead of grazing fresh pasture, cattle are fed hay that was harvested during the growing season. Daily chores include feeding, checking water systems, monitoring body condition, and ensuring cattle stay healthy through changing weather conditions.
Snow, freezing temperatures, and shorter days simply become part of the job.

The work we do in spring affects summer grazing. Summer determines how much feed we’ll have for winter. Fall preparation helps cattle stay healthy through colder months.
