Welcome to our 2025 calving season update, where we’ll share the joys, challenges, and precious moments that come with bringing new life to the ranch! While not every day is a walk in the pasture, there’s something undeniably heartwarming about witnessing a calf take its first steps. Join us as we document the ups and downs of calving week by week—there’s a lot more to come! Are you ready to follow along? Here are the highlights from Week 1.

Day 1
We are going to bring you along for our calving season again this year. Not every day is easy, but there is always something special about seeing new life born on the ranch, even on the tough days. Our first calf in our main calving season has arrived. This isn’t our first calf of the season as we had a few purebreds calves earlier in January and February. This black Simmental X bull calf is from a first time mom. She calved on her own and is doing a wonderful job as a new mom.

Day 2
No new calves today. But these two got turned out into the big field today! This calf was born earlier in February with the early calvers. The boys had a school field trip today and we worked on school! Enjoying the quieter days before calving gets busy. Every calf tag this year is being made with our new laser engraver and they are so easy to read!!

Day 3
No new calves today. We took the quiet day to catch up on some bookwork and get some beef orders ready for delivery. Thank you for all the orders. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Day 4
No calves today so I couldn’t help but take another photo of this guy for today! He has been strutting around the barnyard the past couple days. We will probably only have one that looks like this calf this year. The majority of our herd is Hereford or Hereford X Simmental. However, we have an older Black Angus X cow that we have kept a daughter from. This is her daughter’s calf, his sire is SVS Bond 973G which is a Red Simmental bull.
Day 5
This beautiful heifer calf was born yesterday. She is a SVS Bond 973G calf from our Kassy cow family. When I checked at 6am, I thought her mom was looking uncomfortable. Needless to say, she had this girl within 2 hours. I can’t wait to see this girl grow!
The original Kassy was my show cow when I was in a youth. I showed her at our local 4-H shows and at Bonanza 2001 in Camrose, AB and with her calf at Bonanza 2002 in Salmon Arm, BC. Time sure flies!

Day 6
Woke up to two new calves, both heifer calves. So far, this year seems to be the year for heifer calves. Maybe it will even out as we get more into calving. The bare ground is showing through everywhere. But it started the snow in the evening, so I wonder if we will wake up to a winter wonderland again?

Day 7
Three calves were born in the morning and then the rest of the day was quiet. We had a bit of a snow storm all day. We put straw in a calf shelter ready for the first calf heifer calves that are in the barnyard right now. We will turn them into their new pasture later this week. This first time mom did a great job with her 75 lb calf. She had him clean in no time and he was up and nursing quickly.
Weekly Wrap Up
As we wrap up our first week of calving season, we can’t help but feel grateful for each new life that arrives at the ranch and the memories we create along the way. Despite the challenges, witnessing these miraculous moments brings a sense of joy that’s hard to describe. We look forward to sharing more updates, stories, and maybe even a few surprises in the weeks ahead. What has been your favourite moment so far?
