Introducing Destiny, our show cow and the cornerstone of our purebred herd expansion at Ogilvie Stock Ranch. She represents more than just a cow; she’s a legacy in motion, connecting my childhood dreams, deeply influenced by my grandparents, with our future aspirations at OSR.
Growing up, I was always by my grandfather’s side at cattle shows and sales – his pride and joy, his “little helper.” He taught me the ins and outs of selecting herdsires, igniting a passion that would eventually shape our vision for the ranch. It was from these experiences that the decision to name her Destiny came naturally; she was, after all, the manifestation of a dream that spanned generations.
Destiny’s registered name is CCR 9F Shirley 57K. She arrived at our ranch from Copper Creek Ranch in December 2022, just in time for Christmas, marking the beginning of a new chapter for us. She was welcomed on one of the season’s coldest days. We made her comfortable with our other show heifer, ensuring she settled in despite the freezing conditions. The water troughs froze solid a couple days after her arrival, showing her the harsh realities of winter in Knutsford.
Spring and summer 2023 at the ranch were spent preparing Destiny for the show ring. The boys enjoyed helping me with grooming and training her. She always had a patience about her, standing still and letting the boys learn the fine details of grooming. This diligence paid off when she was awarded Reserve Champion Yearling Heifer both at the IPE and the BC Ag Expo – achievements that filled us with pride. However, it was at the BC Ag Expo where Destiny showed her true colours, playfully asserting her dominance in the ring when hunger struck, a reminder of her spirited nature. She then continued to show this dominance by being the boss heifer in the pen of the bred heifers.
Destiny, beyond her beauty in the show ring, has seamlessly stepped into her role as a mother. In March, she welcomed a heifer calf to the world, sired by Churchill Red Thunder 133J ET. Named OSR 133J Destiny 2M, this calf mirrors her mother’s gentle yet resilient spirit.
Together, they’ve not just graced our fields but have also shone brightly in the competitive circle. At IPE, they were Champion 2-year-old Hereford cow/calf pair, and 2M was Reserve Champion Hereford heifer calf.
Their journey didn’t pause there; September witnessed their continued success at BC Ag Expo in Barriere, BC. 2M was named the Grand Champion Open Heifer Calf, while side by side with Destiny, they won Reserve Champion Open Cow/Calf Pair. These are not just banners or titles; they’re a testament to the legacy and dreams of Ogilvie Stock Ranch.
As the season turns, we are excited for what lies ahead for Destiny and 2M. With plans to showcase 2M in the yearling category next show season, we’re not merely preparing for competitions. We’re making stories of legacy and passion.
As we continue to expand our purebred herd, Destiny’s journey remains a central piece of our narrative. So here’s to Destiny and her calf, to the adventures that lie ahead, and to the enduring legacy of Ogilvie Stock Ranch.
