As calving season approaches, our preparations go beyond the barn and pasture arrangements. The well-being of our newborn calves and their mothers is our top priority, driving us to meticulously organize essential calving supplies that ensure a healthy start for calves and mothers. We store all these supplies in a heated supply room so they are ready when we need them. Here’s a closer look at the critical items we keep on hand.

Packages of Dried Colostrum
The first few hours after birth are crucial for a calf’s immunity. Since not all mothers are able to provide sufficient colostrum immediately and sometimes, in the middle of the night, it is safer and easier to use a bag of dried colostrum, we keep high-quality dried colostrum available to supplement as needed. This ensures every calf receives the vital antibodies necessary to kickstart a healthy life.

Selenium and Vitamin AD Injection
Our area is known to be selenium-deficient, which can impact calf health significantly. To combat this, we administer a selenium injection to each newborn calf, safeguarding against deficiency and promoting optimal growth and development right from the start.

Calving Chains and Vet Sleeve Gloves
To assist with deliveries, we equip ourselves with calving chains, lube and vet sleeve gloves, ensuring we can provide gentle yet effective assistance when necessary. These tools are critical for the safe handling and birthing of calves, reducing stress for both the animal and the handler.

Electrolytes
Some of the older calves, like humans, sometimes require hydration support. We have electrolytes on hand to quickly address any signs of dehydration or weakness, helping our calves regain strength and vitality.

Dehorning Paste, Tags and Tattoo Supplies
To comply with animal welfare standards, we use dehorning paste for young calves when needed. We are now using polled genetics in our herd so over the next few years, we will need to use less and less dehorning paste each year. Additionally, Ritchie tags for identification, RFID tags to comply with Canadian Cattle Identification requirements and tattoo supplies for our purebred cattle are essential for identification, allowing us to keep accurate records of each calf’s genetics, health, and growth.

Necessary Antibiotics for Calving Time
While we strive for natural resistance and health through excellent nutrition and care, we are also prepared to intervene medically when necessary. A select range of antibiotics is kept ready for use under veterinary guidance, ensuring we can quickly address any issues that arise during calving, protecting the health of our herd.
Our Essential Calving Season Kit
Each item in our calving kit plays a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of our calves and their mothers. At Ogilvie Stock Ranch, we take great pride in our preparedness and our dedication to informed, compassionate care practices. As we welcome each new calf to the ranch, these supplies, backed by our family’s expertise and vigilance, help ensure a strong start for the future of our herd.
