Cheers to a new year, friends! It sometimes seems nearly impossible to escape the chaos of life. Yet, this past week has been so relaxing. December and January are slower month on the ranch, and we have been enjoying working on puzzles, watching Christmas movies, doing the daily chores and playing in the snow. We have taken some time for ourselves, relaxed at home with family and spent some time planning out the next 12 months.
Adaption is Key
Raise your hand if 2021 looked anything like the plans you made for it at the end of last year! Yeah? Us either. What a year…. But you know what? We never would have guessed we would be where we are today. 2021 has taught us that adaptation is the key to making it in an ever-changing world.
I love January because it feels like a fresh start. What about you? How do you spend the holidays? What are your plans for 2022? We would love to hear, send us a reply by email or a message on Instagram or Facebook.
A Chilly Week
The past week was very cold here so the daily chores usually take longer than normal. One characteristic of Hereford and Hereford cross cattle that we greatly appreciate is their great hair coats and hardiness. They can handle the cold quite well, in addition to the measures that we take to help shelter them from the weather. To help protect them from the wind, we feed the cattle close to the trees and windbreaks. We also feed them more hay as their feed intake usually increases in the cold.
Love the curiosity of these girls.
Jewel and I sat and watched the heifer calves for a bit the other day after the morning chores. They each have their own personality. This black angus heifer calf was purchased from our neighbour/good family friend. She took a bit to get comfortable with us, but now she is always one of the first to check out what we are doing. She definitely wasn’t too nervous to inch closer to Jewel and I. I think Jewel and I have a new friend.
Top 3 Items for the Cold Weather
There are so many tools that help us with our operation. Our top 3 items that are being used every day right now are:
- Our Carhartt winter jackets which keep us warm in all weather conditions;
- Our iPhones and an iMac to keep track of all our ranch records, while we finalize our records for 2021 and start our new records for 2022; and
- Our wild rags from Ranch Life Wild Rags. Our wild rags each have a photo of our ranch on them! We truthfully couldn’t get through this season of life in the winter without these 3!
We truthfully couldn’t get through this season of life in the winter without these 3.
A Fresh Start
Let’s take on the New Year together.
Don’t let the little things bother you, let go of the negativity in your life, follow your dreams, respect yourself, be true to yourself and be kind this year.
