As the excitement of show season builds, there’s a unique rhythm and routine that transforms our daily life into a dedicated show cattle preparation. In this blog post, I invite you to peek behind the scenes to see how the boys are gearing up to showcase their animals, with a blend of enthusiasm, hard work, and a few tried-and-true tips for young show participants.

Daily Routines: The Heart of Show Prep
Every morning begins with the animals waiting eagerly for their morning feed. Animal care is a full-time commitment. Each day starts with cleaning the stalls in the barn, ensuring their pens are clean. The boys feed their animals twice a day, at approximately the same time each day, learning firsthand the dedication it takes to raise show-quality livestock.

The boys have committed to rinsing their show animals daily, which not only keeps them clean, trains their hair coats and also fosters a strong bond between them and their livestock.
They usually start by rinsing off their steers and heifers, ensuring they are refreshed and ready for the day. With a scrub brush in hand, they carefully brush the hair coats down and then work the hair in an upward angle towards the animals’ heads with a scotch comb.

Next up is blow-drying. Each animal is blown dry to keep them clean and dry. To ensure the hair grows healthy, we use conditioning products that are specially formulated for show animals.

Keeping Cool Under Pressure
During the heat of the day, our steers get a break from the sun as we put in the barn, where we set up fans to keep them cool and comfortable. This helps ensure that they look their best come show day. The heifers also enjoy the cool breeze when they’re not out for breeding.
Consistency is Key
When it comes to preparing show cattle, consistency truly is key. Our daily routines create a sense of predictability that helps the animals feel secure and confident. The boys know that recurring grooming, feeding, and training sessions are not just tasks, but foundations that support their success.

By maintaining a regular schedule, the animals become accustomed to the process. This consistency in care builds trust between the boys and their show cattle, leading to improved performance in the show ring. Plus, it teaches the boys a valuable lesson about the importance of commitment and diligence.
Training: The Dance of Showmanship
Every day is also filled with showmanship practice, as the boys train their animals to walk into position on cue and hold their heads high. It’s a rewarding sight to see them work together!

In preparation for the show, clipping also becomes an integral part of their grooming regimen. The boys take extra time to ensure that their animals’ coats are neatly clipped.
Special Tips for Young Show Participants
For the young show participants out there, here are a few special tips:
- Stay Consistent: Establishing daily routines is essential for your animals’ well-being. When they know what to expect, they are more relaxed and responsive, making it easier for you to manage their care and training. Consistency fosters trust and confidence, setting the foundation for success in the show ring.
- Grooming is Key: Taking the time to groom your animals goes beyond just ensuring they look their best. This daily practice nurtures the bond between you and your animal, creating a sense of comfort and companionship.
- Practice Shows Matter: Regularly training your animals for showmanship is vital for performance. The more effort you invest in practice now, the more prepared both you and your animal will be when it’s showtime. Consistent training helps build confidence, giving you the edge you need to shine in the ring!
- Stay Cool: Keeping your animals cool is crucial for their growth and overall health, especially when it comes time for showing. A comfortable, cool environment not only promotes better growth but also contributes to a hair coat that shines at the show. Ensure your animals have plenty of shade, fresh water, and a cooling system in place, so they can thrive!
- Stay Calm: Establishing a consistent routine ensures both you and your animals approach showing with confidence. When you stick to a familiar schedule, you build trust and strengthen your bond, which will help calm any pre-show jitters. Remember, a relaxed and prepared mindset sets the stage for a more enjoyable and successful experience together at the show!
Show season is filled with challenges, but with dedication, the right techniques, and a bit of enthusiasm, every participant can achieve their best performance. The boys are not just preparing for a competition — they are growing, learning, and having fun every step of the way.
