Ever wondered what a day on a cattle ranch actually looks like?

Yesterday was one of those days that reminded us why no two days are ever the same. We gathered cows before the heat, moved them to fresh pasture, hauled water, repaired a broken fence after our bull escaped, and finished the day covered in dust.
With drought conditions becoming more severe, every decision revolves around finding grass, providing water, and caring for our cattle.

Early mornings are the best time to move cattle—especially during a hot summer.

This past weekend was all about cattle work. We spent the morning sorting a group before moving a portion of them up to a higher-elevation pasture. Not only are the temperatures cooler up there, but it also gives the cattle access to fresh grass while allowing other pastures time to rest and recover.

There’s nothing quite like watching a herd head out to fresh pasture.

Our grazing plans are individualized and developed to fit our own operation and must be flexible in considering livestock type, livestock numbers, weather and forage growth. We are constantly monitoring the health of our grass in order to ensure that we are doing what is best for the grass, our livestock and the environment. One of the perks of ranch life is getting to share

One of the perks of ranch life is getting to share the land with incredible wildlife.

On our way to check cattle at one of our summer pastures, we were lucky enough to spot this cow moose and her calf crossing the road. Seeing moments like this never gets old.

While it’s exciting to watch them, a cow moose with a calf is one animal we always admire from a safe distance. They’re very protective of their young, and giving them plenty of space is the best thing for everyone.

We feel fortunate to ranch in an area that’s home to such amazing wildlife. It’s a reminder that these grasslands and forested lands support much more than livestock—they’re home to countless wild animals, too.

No matter the challenges each season brings, this view reminds us why we do what we do. We’re incredibly grateful to call this beautiful piece of British Columbia home and to have the opportunity to raise our family, care for the land, and produce food for others.
