Did you know rhubarb leaves are toxic to cattle?

We had a bit of a scare on the ranch last week.

We had a group of our show cattle closer to home so the boys could begin halter breaking the calves. To our surprise, a couple of them decided to chew on rhubarb leaves.

Normally, our cattle completely ignore rhubarb. Around here, there are old homesteads scattered through the area, and every year the cattle graze around the plants without touching them. But this year is different.

With the drought, so much of the grass has dried up while the rhubarb has stayed green. Whether it was curiosity or simply the lack of green forage, they decided to sample something they shouldn’t have.

As soon as we noticed, we called our veterinary clinic. They advised us to monitor the calves closely and feed good-quality alfalfa hay because the calcium can help counteract the effects of the oxalates found in rhubarb leaves. Oxalates bind to calcium in the body and can lead to kidney damage.

To be safe, we had blood work done on them about 24 hours later.

Thankfully, everything came back normal, and they appear to have suffered no ill effects.

Needless to say, we are now cutting down every rhubarb plant we find in our grazing areas, and we’ve also been reminding our neighbours to do the same.

Ranching is full of lessons, and this was one we won’t soon forget. Even after years of working with cattle, nature has a way of surprising you.

Three years ago today, the Ross Moore fire started by a lightning strike and proceeded to burn through almost 800 acres of our private land. I can still remember the feeling of sickness that washed over me as we watched the flames approach the land our family has owned for years, not knowing what we’d come home to.

The healing hasn’t been fast. With the drought we’ve been in these past few seasons, the pasture has taken its time coming back — slower than we’d like, and slower than it would in a wetter year. But it is coming back. Grass is finding its way through the burned ground.

It’s a good reminder that healing doesn’t always look like recovery overnight — sometimes it’s just steady, patient progress, one season at a time.

We are grateful for the community that stood with us through it, and for land that keeps teaching us patience.

This summer has been about hauling water.

Some days, if I’m honest, it feels daunting. It can feel like the summer is slipping away as we spend hours each day making sure our cattle have enough water.

Yesterday, we were on our way to pick up another load when the boys started singing together in the truck.

I just smiled and said, “This is what summer is about.”

Not the endless loads of water. Not the drought. Not the never-ending to-do list.

It’s about being together.

It’s about laughing until our stomachs hurt, singing at the top of our lungs, talking about life on the drive between pastures, and making memories in the middle of ordinary days.

Would I rather have a summer with full water sources and green pastures? Of course.

But since we can’t change the weather, we’re choosing to enjoy the unexpected gift it’s given us—more time together.

Years from now, I doubt the boys will remember how many loads of water we hauled.

I hope they’ll remember the songs, the conversations, and the feeling of being together.

Sometimes the hardest seasons quietly become the most meaningful ones. ❤️
