Grazing management is at the forefront of many dec Grazing management is at the forefront of many decisions on the ranch. Right now, we are keeping an eye on the grass growth every day. The key is that we wait sufficient time to give the grass a good opportunity to grow so that the grass is at the appropriate development stage, referred to as grazing readiness. By grazing too early, it can have detrimental impacts on the grass production and the health of the grassland ecosystem for the entire year and into future years. Therefore, ultimately, we want to ensure that our pastures remain healthy and in great conditions for many years to come.
The famous Harvey. Some of you may have met Harvey The famous Harvey. Some of you may have met Harvey on our daily stories. Harvey’s mother passed away suddenly when he was 17 days old. Needless to say, we were close to the end of our calving season so we didn’t have another cow to put him on. So the boys now have a bottle calf. We feed him a bottle 3 times per day. After he nurses the bottle, he loves running and playing with the boys in the barnyard. He is going to spend his summer with Clover, the boys show steer. I am sure the two of them will have lots of fun together and they will love to be pampered by the boys.
Where do our cattle spend the summer? Our cattle a Where do our cattle spend the summer? Our cattle are grazed on our private land and some leased pastures, close to our home ranch in Knutsford. These pastures are fenced, and are between 70-320 acres each. Trees and the topography of the pasture helps to provide shade and shelter for the cattle. We carefully manage all of these pastures as we depend on the health of these grassland ecosystems for many generations.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! We did not exactly expect to wake up to snow this morning…but we made the best of it and had a great snowball fight while doing chores! 4 inches of snow is at least moisture, so we will take it….as long as it warms up soon! The sun is peeking out, that’s hopeful! Have a wonderful Sunday!
This will be our office for the next few days. The This will be our office for the next few days. The grass is starting to come along in our lower elevation pastures so we are hauling some cow/calf pairs out to pasture!! We received 5mm of rain yesterday and hopefully more is on the way. The rain will help to give the grass the boost it needs!
